WhatsApp has introduced a new AI-driven feature called Writing Help, designed to help users improve the tone and style of their messages—whether they want to sound professional, funny, or supportive—while maintaining complete privacy.
Powered by Meta’s Private Processing technology, the Writing Help tool offers real-time suggestions to rephrase messages without compromising user data. Meta assures that neither WhatsApp nor Meta can access the original messages or AI-generated suggestions, thanks to end-to-end encryption and privacy-first design. This technology has also passed independent audits by security experts.
How WhatsApp Writing Help Works
To use the feature, start drafting a message in any one-on-one or group chat. A pencil icon will appear in the text field. Tapping it opens a popup with alternative rewordings of your message in different tones. Users can select a suggested version, which will replace the draft, or they can edit it further before sending.
User Control and Global Rollout
The Writing Help feature is optional and disabled by default. Users must manually enable it via WhatsApp settings, giving them full control over its use. Initially, the feature is rolling out in English across the United States and select countries, with plans to expand language support and availability later in the year.
Competing with AI Writing Tools
By integrating Writing Help directly into its messaging platform, WhatsApp aims to offer a secure and seamless alternative to built-in or third-party AI writing tools. While WhatsApp is mostly known for casual, personal chats, Meta is positioning this feature as a way to make conversations more expressive and reduce the stress of "finding the right words.
