WhatsApp is testing a new AI-powered feature called “Writing Help” that makes chatting easier by improving your messages before you hit send.
The optional tool, currently available in the WhatsApp beta for Android (v2.25.23.7 via Google Play Beta Program), can help you:
- Fix grammar mistakes
- Rephrase sentences
- Change the tone of your text (professional, supportive, funny, etc.)
Here’s how it works: After typing a message, a pen icon will appear next to the chat box. If you tap it, WhatsApp will send your draft securely to Meta AI for quick suggestions. You’ll then get up to three rephrased versions of your text in different tones. You can choose one, edit it further, or just stick with your original. The person receiving your message won’t know that AI helped write it.
According to WhatsApp, the feature is powered by Meta’s Private Processing technology, which ensures your requests are sent through encrypted, anonymous routes that can’t be traced back to you. The company also says it does not store your messages, and Writing Help is completely optional and off by default.
This AI tool could be handy for people who want to sound more professional in work chats, add a touch of humor in friendly conversations, or simply get help when they’re not sure what to write.
The feature is still in limited beta testing and may be updated before its wider release, with more tones possibly added in the future.
