According to a Bloomberg report, OpenAI is actively scouting for local partners to build a high-capacity data center in India, expected to have at least 1 gigawatt of power capacity. The move is seen as part of OpenAI’s broader “Stargate” initiative, aimed at scaling AI infrastructure across Asia and beyond.
While details about the location and project timeline remain under wraps, sources suggest that CEO Sam Altman may announce the data center during his anticipated visit to India in September 2025.
This development comes after OpenAI announced in August its plans to open its first India office in New Delhi, further reinforcing its commitment to the Indian market — the company's second-largest user base globally.
Although Reuters was unable to independently verify Bloomberg’s report, and OpenAI has not yet commented publicly, the initiative aligns with broader global efforts to build next-gen AI infrastructure. Notably, Stargate was first revealed by former U.S. President Donald Trump in January as part of a $500 billion private sector investment, backed by SoftBank, OpenAI, and Oracle.
If executed, the data center would represent a landmark investment in India’s digital and AI ecosystem, potentially boosting local innovation, job creation, and AI accessibility across the region.
