TikTok may be back in India 5 years after ban: Website opens but app unavailable

After being banned for five years, TikTok’s website has suddenly become partly accessible in India, sparking buzz about a possible comeback.

Some users in India are now able to open TikTok’s homepage, but most other sections of the site remain blocked. The app itself is still unavailable on Google Play Store and Apple App Store, and TikTok has not made any official announcement about returning to India.

People online have shared mixed experiences—while a few can open the website, others still see error messages saying the service isn’t available in their region. Even the Times of India tech team could only access the homepage, while other sections like “Newsroom” and “Careers” were blocked.

TikTok was originally banned in India in 2020, along with 58 other Chinese apps such as Shareit and CamScanner, over national security concerns. The government had cited risks to India’s sovereignty, security, and public order.

The news has once again triggered discussions about whether the short-video app, which once had a massive user base in India, could be gearing up for a return. However, nothing is confirmed yet.

Globally, TikTok is also facing challenges. In the US, the app is under pressure to be sold to an American company due to security concerns. Meanwhile, TikTok is restructuring its operations in the UK and laying off staff, saying it will rely more on artificial intelligence for moderation.
