OpenAI has officially launched its India-first Learning Accelerator program, aimed at transforming education for students and teachers with the help of AI. The initiative was announced in New Delhi on August 25, 2025, by Leah Belsky, VP of Education at OpenAI.
ChatGPT for Indian Students
Belsky highlighted that ChatGPT’s Study Mode is designed to provide high-quality answers tailored to the Indian curriculum. Over time, OpenAI plans to improve support for local languages and teaching styles, making AI more useful for Indian students.
Collaboration with IIT Madras
As part of the initiative, OpenAI has entered into a research partnership with IIT Madras, supported by $500,000 in funding. The research will focus on how AI can:
Improve learning outcomes
Foster innovative teaching methods
Integrate insights from cognitive neuroscience
Free ChatGPT Licenses for Teachers & Students
Over the next six months, OpenAI will distribute around 500,000 ChatGPT licenses and provide training for educators and students. This will be done in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, AICTE, and ARISE.
“The goal is to make AI a personal tutor for students and a time-saving tool for teachers, while also becoming a core infrastructure for institutions,” Belsky said.
Why India?
India has more than 300 million students, making it one of the largest and most diverse education systems in the world. From IITs and top universities to rural schools with limited resources, OpenAI sees India as a key market for educational transformation.
Interestingly, over 50% of ChatGPT’s Indian users are under 24, showing that students are among the platform’s most active users.
New Leadership in India
To strengthen its presence, OpenAI has appointed Raghav Gupta as Head of Education for India and Asia Pacific. He will work with schools, colleges, researchers, and governments to integrate AI into education.
Gupta explained that OpenAI’s tools can help teachers with lesson planning, assignments, and student engagement, while also ensuring wider accessibility for all.
