India’s parliament has passed a landmark bill banning the country’s vast online gambling industry, citing massive financial and social harm.
Government data showed online gambling companies were draining nearly $2.3 billion annually from 450 million Indians, sparking widespread concern over addiction, fraud, and money laundering.
The new Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill criminalises offering, promoting, or financing money-based games like poker, card games, and fantasy sports. Offenders could face up to five years in prison.
The move directly impacts India’s booming fantasy sports market, including cricket giant Dream11, which sponsors the national team. Following the bill, Dream11 suspended cash contests but promised fans updates soon.
While gambling apps face a ban, the law carves out exceptions for e-sports and educational games, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi stating it will “encourage safe digital recreation while protecting society from the harmful effects of money games.”
